5 Tips for a Stress-Free Family Photo Session

Family sessions have a reputation for being stressful — wrangling kids, coordinating outfits, hoping for good weather. It doesn't have to be that way. Here are five things that make the biggest difference for the families I photograph.

1. Plan around nap schedules, not the "best" light

Golden hour is beautiful, but a well-rested toddler beats perfect light every time. If your family has young kids, book a time when everyone is naturally at their best — we can still find great light within that window.

2. Coordinate colors, don't match

Matching head-to-toe outfits tend to photograph flat. Instead, pick two or three complementary colors and let everyone wear their own version of them. It reads as put-together without looking like a uniform.

3. Bring a "just in case" snack

A small snack (nothing too messy) can turn a meltdown into a five-minute breather. I'd always rather pause for a snack break than push through a hard moment.

4. Build in unstructured time

Some of the best photos happen in the gaps between posed shots — a piggyback ride, a tickle fight, a quiet hug. I always leave room in the session for this to happen naturally.

5. Let go of "perfect"

Real laughter and a slightly messy moment will always feel more like your family than a stiff, forced smile. That's what we're after.
